HireMarines.com, the job-finding Web site of Oceansiders Mark and Tori Baird, has opened its virtual doors to all service members in the area, and soon the country.

The site, now also accessible as HirePatriots.com to indicate its openness to Army, Navy and Air Force personnel, will roll out a nationwide job service in the next few weeks, Mark Baird said Tuesday. The couple started the site earlier this year as a free service for Marines in need of some extra cash.

People looking to hire service members or their spouses for day or part-time jobs ---- or even permanent jobs for the honorably discharged ---- post their job offerings on the site. Those looking for work can search by type of job and location. It also has a classified ad section.

Baird said he has put tens of thousands of dollars into the site. Moreover, people from outside North County, the original target audience, have become interested in the concept. So the site has unexpectedly turned into a full-time job for the couple, who had planned to retire.

"We're getting 10,000 people a month going to the site, half of them are Marines," Baird said. "Placing a banner on our site is a legitimate business expense."
So in a few weeks, HirePatriots.com will launch nationally, Baird said. The Web site will display a map listing every base in the country. Companies and individuals looking to hire will be able to click on the base nearest them to get a list of who is available, or to post their job openings.

To provide the software and technical support for the expanded Web site, the Bairds have turned to two Escondido businesses that are providing discounted services. They are Workforce Media Group Inc., which provides the job board software; and I Business Forum, which provides technical consulting.
Mike Johnston, owner of I Business Forum and himself a former Marine, said HirePatriots.com is the electronic equivalent of "the paper bulletin board you'd see in the mess hall."

Don Kerins, owner of Workforce Media Group, said he provides Web-based job board services targeted to specific business areas, and HireMarines is a good example of reaching a targeted audience.

The job board software will be modified to make it easier for individuals to hire for day jobs, Baird said. Currently, the site asks employers for technical information standard for corporate hiring, but that could be "intimidating" to people just looking for help with yard work or similar informal jobs.
